SO it's been a very long while since I've posted anything here. I'm not about to delete this blog any time soon, but I'm not sure I'll be coming back to it in the near future.

If you are still interested to see my new artwork and work-in-progress, I post regularly over on tumblr at inklingart.tumblr.com! Hope to see you there.

Fig.02 Walking Willow

details:

8.5" x 11" watercolor and gouache

Another "naturalist" style fantasy creature, based on the notion that willows could pull up their roots and go for a walk. Considering the ability of clippings to put out roots, I came up with this little guy.

This image was drawn and painted almost entirely while watching LoL tournaments.

Fig.01 Mandrake Childe

details:

8.5x11" watercolor and gouache

I'm starting a sort of complimentary series to bottled, inspired by old naturalists like Audubon and Beatrix Potter (if you aren't familiar with her more scientific illustration work you should check it out!). The series will indulge a lot of the weirder mythical critters I can find.

Shipwreck Flag

5.5 x 8 inches, watercolor

I'm including a lineart stage scan here to show that I was experimenting with a two-color drawing base.  Also because it's fun (at least for me) to see how the composition evolved here.

The pirate flag in this painting borrows elements from several historical flags but doesn't fully represent any design that I came across.

Kells-Style Green Lion

felt pens (line art) and watercolor, roughly 4x5"

I sometimes listen in on other game sessions that my friends play on vent. This creature from one of those sessions is a winged lion, but with leaves instead of fur. I had the impulse to do something celtic-inspired and it seemed like good subject fodder...

New sketchbooks are fun.

I began a new sketchbook today, so have a tree golem and some monster skulls in brown micron and watercolor. Looks like the paper in this book will take a little watercolor abuse if I'm not too rough with it, so yay!

Threadless Loves Death

Given that I draw a lot of skeletons I thought I'd have a little fun making an entry for "Threadless Loves Death."

Today in "hobbies I should probably talk about more often..."

I know it's been a while since I've mentioned anything about my gaming hobby. I need to make a tag for all of my character drawings and hunt down all of the old sketches.

So one of my friends is running a steampunk D&D campaign and these came out of my sketchbook as we played. The whole thing is online so we use vent and maptools to play together.

Suffice it to say, I'm playing a warforged artificer with a clockwork cricket familiar. The sketch set there is me trying to figure out warforged faces and designing one that I like.

Stamp Art Fever: Frost Fae

Ahha, they’ve previewed this design so I can show it now!

This is a stamp illustration I created for a game called Stamp Art Fever. The game is all about collecting stamps, and there’s a lot of art in it. Check it out! I also did four other paintings for a small fantasy christmas themed stamp set, but this is the only one that's been shown publicly so far!

More recent art.

A holiday card design for my parents, featuring their cats!

I can't believe I forgot to post this painting to the blog! I started this personal piece about 18 months before I finished it... I had became of painting ivy and busy with professional work and it was buried under a stack of sketches for a long time. When I finally dug it up again I decided it had to be finished!

It's a mock cover painting for "The Secret Garden."
